Fire-rated door assemblies

Fire-rated door assemblies

A rated opening is a system, not a door. We supply the door, frame and hardware as one labelled assembly.

The label is on the assembly, not just the door

A rated opening only performs if the door, the frame, the hinges, the latching hardware and the closer are all rated and installed together. Swap one piece for an unlabelled equivalent and the assembly is no longer compliant — which is usually discovered at inspection, not at ordering.

We specify rated openings as complete assemblies and flag the pieces that cannot be substituted.

What we supply

Labelled hollow metal doors and frames

Steel doors and frames carrying the rating on the schedule, from the same lines as our standard openings.

Labelled wood doors

Architectural wood doors with a fire label, where the opening has to be rated and still look like the rest of the floor.

Rated closing and latching hardware

Closers, exit devices and locksets listed for the assembly, not swapped in from an unrated equivalent.

Seals, gasketing and lite kits

Smoke and fire gasketing, astragals and glazing within the limits the rating allows.

What we coordinate on a rated opening

  • Labelled door and labelled frame, matched to the rating on the schedule.
  • Closing and latching hardware that carries the rating with it.
  • Hinges, seals and astragals appropriate to the assembly.
  • Glazing and lite kits where the rating permits them.

Fire-rated questions

Can I substitute an unlabelled part into a rated opening?
No. The label covers the assembly, so an unlabelled door, frame, hinge, closer or latch takes the whole opening out of compliance — normally discovered at inspection rather than at ordering.
Do you supply the door and frame as one rated assembly?
Yes. The labelled door, the labelled frame and the closing and latching hardware are specified together so the opening passes as installed.
Can a rated opening have glass in it?
Within the limits of the rating, yes — lite kits and glazing are available where the assembly permits them, and the permitted area shrinks as the rating goes up.

Rated openings on your schedule?

Send the schedule and we will confirm the assemblies before anything is ordered.
